I don't condone drunk bass playing, but I did try to record playing on my back... and that take did not make the cut. As I was listening back to the recordings from yesterday and editing em' down, I was honestly shocked at how well some of them came out. Now don't get your hopes up, but last night I thought I had wasted a day of recording, and it turned out decent. I guess my classes were right, fresh ears really do make a difference.

Day Four
Wednesday was a long day of recording, too long... I spent way to much time nit-picking. Most of this was because of me trying to lay down a nice bassline, in the Motown style, which is impossible, because of this guy:
That is the legendary James Jamerson, and he reinvented bass playing. Quick story: When Marvin Gaye was recording "What's Going On" Marvin was pressed for time and needed James' signature bass playing on the track. He found James, blasted drunk in a club and dragged him back to the studio. James was unable to stand or sit, but preceded to play the bass line lying on his back. And that bass line is...amazing! Check it out here:

I can't wait to hear it! Are you using Big John for the bass lines? I hope he's serving you well. Katelyn and I are coming to Michigan from April 1 -4, I can't wait to hear some of the stuff. Maybe I could add a triangle to one of the songs! :)
yes to fresh ears! I was dooing some detailed work today (cutting hair) and was going nuts because it all started looking out of focus and just wrong. Then I walked away for a second and when I came back I found out: it looked great.
ha! and i realize that i should have made soem comment in there before my story abotu how fresh EYES can be needed in just the same way as fresh ears... ha! ah well.
