A Holiday At The Sea

Last Friday I was having a conversation with a friend and we talked for a good long time about how frustrated we were that we get caught up in the moment of things, losing our focus that should be placed on the Father. Even though in losing my focus I may not do an action of evil; I am still not doing as I should. James writes, "Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins (4:17)." It is not just that I am sinning when I miss the good I should do; I am also being entirely ungrateful! That is what really frustrates me. The Koran tells that there is no such thing as an Atheist, but only one who is ungrateful to Ah-lah. I appreciate how Islam drives home the concept of gratefulness. If I was really grateful to God would I lose focus? Once focus is lost we tend to focus on the more temporal. I focus on earthly love, satisfaction, appreciation, fulfillment, ect. when there is a heavenly being longing to lavishly give. Lewis puts it brilliantly:

"Indeed, if we consider the unblushing promises of reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised in the Gospels, it would seem that Our Lord finds our desires, not too strong, but too weak.
We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased." - C. S. Lewis (from Mere Christianity)

Lewis!! How do you do it? Speaking of amazement...Anathallo wrote an EP on this Holiday at sea concept. This is the title track:
Anathallo - A Holiday at Sea

This is one of my favorite bands ever! I don't say that often, but this band really has something. I have always thought of myself as an Anathallo missionary, spreading the good news all over the world. If you have not given this band a good listen you must! The name comes from the greek word meaning "to renew" or "to cause to bloom again." They met at college and started making ska music (come on you know we were all there at some point), but the years have been good to these friends from Mt. Plesent, Michigan. With a lineup of 7 to 10 playing a variety of instruments, their live show is incredible, and the attention to detail that they have in the studio makes for ridiculously good music!
